Snack Attack: 6 Human Foods That Are Dangerous for Pets

A rich collection of whole foods including poultry, fish, fresh vegetables, grains, legumes, and dairy. Perfect representation of a balanced and nutritious diet.

We all love sharing snacks with our pets—those puppy eyes are hard to resist! But not all human food is safe for furbabies. Some everyday treats can actually cause tummy troubles or worse. Don’t worry—we’ve listed the most
common “no-no” foods and what you can give instead.

For pets with existing health conditions, always ask your vet before introducing new food.

6 Human Foods You Should Never Share with Pets

Some foods that are safe for humans can be dangerous for our furry friends. Knowing what to avoid helps keep your pet healthy, happy, and out of the vet’s office. Here are six common foods you should never share with your pets.

A dense collection of various chocolates, including dark, milk, and white chocolate bars, chips, disks, and piles of cocoa powder and cacao nibs.

Chocolate

Contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, restlessness, or seizures.

Carob Treats for Dog

Swap With: Pet-Safe Carob Treats

Carob looks and tastes similar to chocolate but is completely safe for pets. It’s naturally sweet, full of fiber, and gives them that “treat” feeling without the danger.

A wooden spoon full of dark, dried raisins is centered over a pile of fresh, bright green grapes.

Grapes & Raisins

These can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs, even in small quantities. Symptoms can include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite.

Swap With: Small Pieces of Apple (No Seeds)

Apples are rich in vitamins A and C and provide a satisfying crunch your pet will love—just remember to remove the seeds and core.

A composition of kitchen staples: a red onion bulb, a white garlic bulb, a loose clove of garlic, and sprigs of fresh rosemary.

Onions & Garlic

Whether raw, cooked, or powdered, these can destroy red blood cells, leading to anemia and weakness over time.

Swap With: Cooked Carrots or Green Beans

These vegetables are safe, naturally sweet, and packed with nutrients that help support healthy digestion and vision.

An avocado cut in half, showing the bright green flesh and the large brown pit in the center, set against a solid green background.

Avocado

Contains persin, a toxin that can upset your pet’s stomach or cause more serious health issues in large amounts.

Swap With: Cucumber Slices

Cucumbers are low in calories, hydrating, and perfect for a light, crunchy treat on a warm day.

A small, olive-green ceramic bowl filled with a white, granular sweetener, likely xylitol, with a silver spoon resting inside.

Xylitol (in Sugar-Free Gum & Candy)

This artificial sweetener causes a rapid insulin release in pets, leading to dangerously low blood sugar and possible liver failure.

Two white ceramic bowls filled with different types of brown, dry pet kibble; the back bowl has round nuggets, and the front bowl has ring-shaped pieces.

Swap With: Crunchy Pet Biscuits

These satisfy your pet’s urge to chew while being made with safe ingredients and the right balance of flavor and nutrition.

Two liquids being poured side-by-side: a dark beverage (coffee) into a white mug, and a red beverage (wine) into a wine glass.

Alcohol & Caffeine

Even tiny amounts can harm your pet’s liver, heart, and nervous system, leading to serious illness or worse.

Swap With: Fresh Water or Vet-Approved Herbal Teas

Keeping your pet hydrated with clean, cool water or mild, vet-approved herbal infusions supports their energy, digestion, and overall well-being.
